Battle.net Guide

Blizzard provides a free game hosting service to everyone who owns a copy of Diablo, Diablo II, and/or Diablo II: Lord of Destruction which also serves as a chat utility and listing service. With Diablo II, you'll have access to two different Battle.net services, open and Realm (closed) games. Open games allow you to play your single player character online with friends, however cheating may run rampant due to the fact characters are saved on your computer. With Realm games, Blizzard actually keeps your characters on their Battle.net servers, which prevents cheating/hacking and gives everyone peace of mind that their items may be unique.

In addition to the 7 character classes available in Diablo II and Lord of Destruction, there are four other ways in which characters are classified.
